Protecting workers requires attention to many factors to prevent accidents. Workplace safety inspections seek both to reduce accidents and to address the conditions that can cause them.

Industrial gloves and their applications

Gloves come in different sizes, materials and reinforcement types. They are designed for professional, commercial and industrial tasks where hand protection is required or recommended.

According to the Chemical Reagents and Waste Center at the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG), three parameters help assess glove performance:
Degradation: a change in a glove's physical characteristics.
Permeation: the rate at which a chemical passes through the glove material.
Breakthrough time: the time between initial contact with the glove's outside surface and the chemical reaching the inside.

Inspect gloves before, during and after use for deterioration, discoloration, peeling and drying. Recommend periodic replacement according to the PPE's condition.

Some types of protective gloves

Blue disposable nitrile gloves:

These gloves offer good touch sensitivity. Applications described include food handling, nonsurgical procedures in hospitals and clinics, beauty salons and cleaning tasks involving chemical or biological exposure.


Green nitrile gloves:

Intended for light and medium general work, including cleaning, meat and food handling, chemical and automotive industries, and maintenance, repair and operations (MRO). They can be worn over cut-resistant or thermal gloves to add a waterproof layer.

Latex gloves:

Commonly used in cleaning and agroindustry, latex gloves resist liquid penetration and offer protection for tasks involving chemical hazards.

Vinyl gloves:

Used in beauty and personal care, food preparation, pharmacies and compounding, vinyl gloves protect hands from contact with contaminants or substances that may cause allergies. They are disposable.

Knitted gloves with or without PVC dots:

Made from cotton and polyester yarn, with or without raised PVC dots on the palm, these gloves suit light work handling dry materials at room temperature. Applications include logistics, load handling, packaging, construction, gardening and automotive work.

Tactile gloves:

Designed for light and moderate tasks, these gloves resist abrasion and provide touch sensitivity. Applications include handling, assembly, maintenance, de-energized wiring systems and small-part handling.

Textured latex gloves:

Made from natural latex with a textured cuff, these gloves are described for cleaning, gardening, household, food and industrial tasks involving chemical, thermal or mechanical hazards.

Neolatex gloves:

Made from natural latex and neoprene, with nonslip reinforcement on the palm and fingers, these gloves protect against chemical hazards. Applications include industry, cleaning, chemical handling, food work and gardening.
